February 4 marks 102 years since George Finch was awarded Australia’s first Winter Olympic 🥇gold medal. Medals were awarded for the ‘sport’ of Alpinism (mountaineering) at the 1924, 1932 and 1936 Olympic Winter Games. Finch was among 13 members of a British expedition that made an unsuccessful attempt to climb Mount Everest in 1922 and they were awarded special gold medals by Baron Pierre de Coubertin for their efforts on the final day of the first Games in Chamonix in 1924. Finch was the stepfather of Australian Academy Award winning actor Peter Finch.
